Welcome from the Parents Fund Committee Co-Chairs
The Parents Fund Committee is a diverse and engaging group. Our membership includes both alumni and non-alumni parents who hail from all over the globe, from Charlottesville to Hong Kong! We get together twice a year to connect with one another and to hear from University leaders about topics ranging from career services, to student safety, to what’s “hot now” in and around the school. Providing Students Shelter From the Storm
Of the many things that can derail one’s education, financial hardship is among the most unfortunate. Each year, thousands of students across the nation are forced to discontinue their undergraduate studies due to unforeseen circumstances.
Student Advising Finds Its Home
Imagine leaving the relative familiarity of high school for a place like UVA, where options are suddenly endless and important life choices abound. For many undergraduate students, this transition can feel overwhelming.
Investing in Bright Futures for Tomorrow’s Leaders
The energy of spring and a strong sense of purpose inspired members of the UVA Parents Fund Committee as they gathered for their April 8 meeting. With high spirits and focused attention, the committee members heard from President Teresa Sullivan and many others about how the Parents Fund is making the UVA student experience even better.
BIG Event Gets BETTER, Thanks to Parents Fund
It’s a BIG Event that’s become bigger—and BETTER—with improvements funded by the UVA Parents Fund. The BIG Event, a one-day community service event held April 9, was sponsored by Madison House, UVA’s volunteer center. Tim Freilich, Madison House’s executive director, said that this year’s nearly $28,000 grant from the Parents Fund to upgrade technology resulted in a smooth and successful event.
Grant Puts Club Team in the Driver’s Seat
It’s experiential learning to the fullest, with plenty of rough bumps along the way. Thanks to the UVA Parents Fund, the roar of a dune buggy engine will again echo in the ears of the Virginia Baja Racing Society of Automotive Engineers. The student organization received a generous $8,000 grant from the Parents Fund to design, build and race their car, which is similar to the Class 1 Buggies that compete in the Baja 1000, the famous off-road race along Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula.
Fostering Connections & Diversity
With support from the UVA Parents Fund, connecting with peers is made easier—and students are thriving. UVA’s celebration of Black History Month highlights the generous support of parents to such programs as Black Student Alliance, NAACP at UVA, and BMI.
UVA’s Parents Fund Gives Generously to the Student Experience
With a history of funding initiatives like Madison House, the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and Total Advising, the UVA Parents Fund provides the “cherry on top,” when it comes to enhancing the student experience.
Corks & Curls Makes a Comeback
For generations, the UVA yearbook Corks & Curls offered alumni a nostalgic reminder of the time they spent at the University. Now, after a seven-year hiatus, the UVA Parents Fund is helping to revive this venerable tradition.
Classes, Careers and "Game of Thrones"
What do "Game of Thrones," career advising and class schedules have in common? As it turns out, more than one might think.
Getting Smart About Substance Abuse
Created in 2010, the Gordie Center for Substance Abuse Prevention is rethinking and revitalizing substance-abuse prevention at the University of Virginia.
